Morgon is without doubt the most typical of the ten Beaujolais Crus, or at least the easiest to identify at a tasting. Its ‘terroir’ taste intensifies over time, reminding certain experienced and tasters to wax lyrical about ‘fox fur’ and ‘cherry jam’. We therefore say that it ‘morgons’, an enigmatic word that has been unanimously adopted by its supporters. The science of wine always enjoys a touch of mystery !
It takes its name from a hamlet whose wine fame made it take on that of the village of Villié, to the extent that the latter is close to being forgotten. When they talk about their wine, its producers like to use the mischievous slogan ‘the fruit of a Beaujolais, the charm of a Burgundy’. The Côte du Py ‘Climat’ is very well-known and its wines fully express the very special character of Morgon.
It is a singularly robust, straightforward wine, in a word, virile, that may be laid down for many years.
