Ch\u00e9nas, the village that has given its name to the wine (unless it s the other way round!), is the smallest of the ten Crus in terms of volume. This is probably why it is so unjustly unknown, however it is really excellent value for money. Its name is thought to have originated from the Gallic word cassanus , which means a place planted with oak, or from a Roman patrician called Canus. Whatever the case, it is known that the land in the commune was for a long time covered by an oak forest, and we know that, from distant
\nAntiquity, the Druids placed great importance on this sacred tree. And wasn t it the Gauls who invented the barrel, an ingenious container in which could not only be vinified and matured, but also transported? Some people say that Ch\u00e9nas was Louis XIII s favourite wine. To merit royal favour is no mean compliment.
