History

A slope of Gamay grapes, rising to over 250 meters above sea level and wonderfully south-facing, “Pisse-Vieille” is now farmed by a dozen winegrowers and owes its reputation to a legend…

The heroine of this legend is a very pious winegrower who regularly went to confession at the parish priest’s house to tell him about her petty sins. But she had nothing very serious to confess. So, quite simply, one day, the priest set her free, saying: “Go on! And sin no more! But the old woman was a little hard of hearing. She simply heard: “Go! And stop pissing! It has to be said that in Beaujolais dialect, to sin is to piss. The rest is easy to imagine. The old lady was only relieved of her ordeal when her worried husband went to see the parish priest to ask for clarification. He returned home, shouting from the bottom of the hill, “Pisse vieille, pisse vieille, le curé l’a dit! And so the place was christened.
