A twenty-hectare hillside in Cercié, wonderfully south-facing.
Pisse-Vieille is the only climat in the brouilly appellation, but it’s also a locality whose name comes from a rather famous story in Beaujolais.
The heroine of this legend is a good local woman, a very pious winegrower who regularly went to confession at the parish priest’s house to tell him about her petty sins.
But she had nothing very serious to confess.
So, quite simply, one day, the priest set her free, saying: “Go on! And sin no more!
But the old woman was a little hard of hearing.
She simply heard: “Go! And don’t pee anymore!
It has to be said that in Beaujolais dialect, to sin is to piss.
The rest is easy to imagine.
The old lady was only relieved of her ordeal when her worried husband went to see the parish priest to ask for clarification.
He returned home, shouting from the bottom of the hill, “Pisse vieille, pisse vieille, le curé l’a dit!
And so the locality was christened.
